Wildlife

Nuisance Wildlife Control-There are several species of wildlife in our area that can cause crop and personal property damage or just create a nuisance.  There are certain issues that need to be considered, along with regulations that must be followed when dealing with problem wildlife.  If you have wildlife causing you an inconvenience, we can provide you with recommendations to alleviate the problem.

Crop Damage Investigations-Losing some of your crops?  We can assist you with identifying the animals causing the damage and provide recommendations for control.  You also may be eligible to receive nuisance permits.

Wildlife Management Plans-Incorporating your goals and objectives for your property, we can help you enhance wildlife habitat for the species you want to attract.  There are also a couple of programs that could provide financial assistance.  The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) offers cost share to landowners for converting highly erodible cropland or other environmentally sensitive acreage to vegetative cover, such as native grasses, wildlife plantings, trees, filter strips, or riparian buffers.  CRP reduces soil erosion, protects the Nation’s ability to produce food and fiber, reduces sedimentation in streams and lakes, improves water quality, established wildlife habitat, and enhances forest and wetland resources.  The Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) encourages creation of high quality wildlife habitat, such as wetlands and native prairies, on private land.  Through WHIP, technical and financial assistance are offered to landowners to develop upland, wetland, riparian, and aquatic habitat areas on their property.

Pond Management-Recommendations for weed control, fish stocking, etc...We annually sell fingerlings for stocking new or renovated ponds.  Check out the following website for more information on managing ponds for fishing and attracting wildlife:  www.ohiodnr.com/publications/pondmanagement/default.htm

Food Plot Recommendations-Call the wildlife specialist for some recommendations.

Wildlife Related Educational Program-Education is important in our programs from school age children to adults.  Our programs are designed to promote stewardship principles that will serve to preserve and protect our natural resources and our wildlife.   Most of our presentations are 30 minutes long but we can work with you to tailor it to fit your setting whether indoors or outdoors.

Nuisance Trapper Contacts-Please contact the office for a list of nuisance trappers in our area.

Hunter Safety Classes-Contact the office for upcoming classes.

WETLANDS—ONE OF OHIO’S NATURAL WONDERS

What is a wetland?  Basically as the name implies, a wetland is an area greatly influenced by the presence of water at or near the surface, throughout the year or intermittently.

Wetland comes in various shapes, sizes, and names-swamps, marshes, fens, bogs, peatlands, oxbows, sloughs, wet meadows, vernal pools, or potholes.

Ohio at one time was comprised of approximately 5 millions acres; currently there are only about 800,000 acres that still exist.

Wetlands are a vital resource.  Consider just a few of the many benefits wetlands provide:

                 *Filter pollutants via surface runoff

*Reduce flood damage by creating extra storage

                 *Recharge aquifers

                 *Provide countless educational opportunities

*Provide recreational opportunities (hunting, fishing, bird watching, etc.)

*Provides necessary habitat for plants, invertebrates, mammals, and waterfowl

A wetland is a diverse area of plant and animal life.  Did you know that a third of all species of birds, 190 species of amphibians, and nearly all of the ducks and geese known to us depend on wetlands for survival?  And nearly 5,000 species of plants are found in our wetlands throughout the country.

Programs that allow for the restoration of wetlands include the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP).

There are also other agencies and organizations who are able to provide assistance including the ODNR Division of Wildlife, Ohio EPA (319 grants), and Ducks Unlimited.  For more information contact any of the resource professionals mentioned.

For those that currently have a wetland on their property or are considering building one, check out the Ducks Unlimited publication, “Wetland Habitat Management:  A Guide for Landowners”.  The manual will help you understand wetlands better, offer criteria for site selection, explain regulations and permits that may be needed, and provide design and construction options, in addition to wildlife habitat management considerations.
