Conservation Planning & Engineering Assistance:
Since its inception in 1942 the District has helped hundreds of landowners solve problems related to manure and nutrient management, soil erosion, and drainage.
If you’re having difficulty with erosion in your field, considering building a manure storage facility or planning a new livestock facility give us a call. Our experienced staff can arrange to meet you at the site and offer our recommendations.
Survey and design assistance for grassed waterways, spring developments, manure storage structures, and erosion control structures is available to you at no charge. In addition, there may be state or federal funds available to you to help offset some of the cost.
Drainage complaints or concerns are common and complex. Currently in Ohio there is not an agency that enforces drainage laws. They must be handled in civil court. For further information visit the following web site: http://ohioline.ag.ohio-state.edu/b822/b822_1.html.
No-Till Grain Drill Rental:
Have you ever considered no-till as your planting method? If so, give the District a call. We have three no-till drills available for rent in the county.
The John Deere 1590 no-till drill was purchased new in 2005. It plants on a 7.5” row spacing at 10’ wide, weighs 6,123 pounds empty and requires at least an 85-horse power tractor. This machine rents for $12.00 per acre. This machine works well for oats, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa.
The Great Plains Solid Stand no-till drill was purchased new in 2004. It plants on a 8” row spacing at 10’ wide, weighs 4,390 pounds empty and requires at least an 85-horse power tractor. This machine rents for $12.00 per acre. This machine works well for oats, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa.
The Tye Pasture Pleaser no-till drill was purchased new in 2000. It plants on a 7” row spacing at 7’ wide, weighs 2,740 pounds empty and requires at least a 49-horse power tractor. This machine rents for $10.00 per acre. This machine works well for oats, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa. In addition, it is equipped with a native grass seed box for planting warm season grasses such as big and little bluestem and Indian grass. Contact the District if you are planning a warm season grass planting due to the difficulty in seeding them. We would be glad to work with you to ensure a successful seeding.
Pond Site Evaluations:
If a pond is in your future give us call. Choosing the proper site for a pond can mean the difference between a constant headache or a place of enjoyment. The District can work with you to evaluate the topography, soils and drainage acres for a pond site. It may also be necessary to dig holes with a backhoe to do an in depth evaluation of the soils. This is done at the expense of the landowner and the Ohio Utilities Protect Service must be notified at least 48 hours (2 working days) prior to digging.
Often times we are asked about the need for a permit to construct a pond, however, most ponds in our area are relatively small and therefore exempt from needing a permit. If you have questions on dam permits log on to the ODNR-Division of Water’s web site at http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/odnr/water/dsafety/prmitdam.html to get further information on the Ohio Dam Safety Law. A guide to managing ponds for fishing and attracting wildlife can be found at: http://ohiodnr.com/publications/pondmanagement/default/htm
C.A.U.V. Application Assistance:
The Current Agricultural Use Valuation is a real estate tax reduction program available to landowners who have property that is devoted to commercial agriculture or timber production.
The District will complete the CAUV computation sheet and provide you with a soils map and aerial photo of the property to accompany your CAUV application. A fee of $25.00 for the first parcel and $5.00 for each additional parcel will be charged for service.
The Ohio Forestry Tax Law (OFTL) is another real estate tax reduction program available to woodland owners. For further information on the CAUV program and the Ohio Forest Tax Law (OFTL) program visit the following web sites: http://ohioline.ag.ohio-state.edu/cd-fact/1267.html or http://www.hcs.ohio-state.edu/ODNR/Landownerasst/tax.htm.
